V-Ball

When I was in Jr. High and High School, my school had a strong volleyball program. Not many schools had a boys team, so they were ranked pretty high in the state. Most districts boasted a girls team, and our team did pretty well.

It was around this time that the girls uniforms changed from the loose fitting shorts to short legged tights. I was a very observant 14 year old, and I paid a lot of attention to this change. I became a sudden volleyball fan, and even attended a few games.

Today I took my family to a Purdue volleyball game. The ladies are still wearing the tights, but, closing in on 30 years later, they didn't have the same affect on me. Sure, they are attractive women, but they are attractive YOUNG women. I found myself feeling more paternal than libidinous.

This match was hyped as an attempt to "Pack Mackey" Arena to attract the largest ever crowd to a Big-10 v-ball match. All seats were $1 (although mine were free - perks of the job - yes, that's $4 I saved!). While they only ended up with 8K or so fans, it was still the 2nd largest crowd ever at a Purdue match.

I don't know if they usually have pep bands at volleyball games, but I expected one today - similar to the band that plays at the basketball games. What I didn't expect was the entire All American Marching Band in the stands. I didn't see them come in, but when they hit that first note, everyone knew they were there. The sound was incredible! As an added bonus, the Purdue Glee Club sang the national anthem.

Oh, and Purdue won.

The rules of volleyball have changed many times since William Morgan first developed the game in 1895 with an original purpose of providing some form of recreation and relaxation for businessmen at the Holyoke, MA Y.M.C.A. The first rules, written by Mr. Morgan in longsportsbook hand, contained the following basic features: The net was 6 feet, 6 inches high. The court was 25 X 50 feet Any number of participants was allowed. The length of the game was nine innings, with three outs allowed per team per inning. Continuous air dribbling of the ball was permissible up to a restraining line 4 feet from the net. No limit on the number of hits on each side of the court. A served ball could be assisted across the net. A second serve (as in tennis) was permitted if the first resulted in a fault. Any ball hitting the net, except on the first service, was a fault and resulted in side out.
